How Are Gen Z and Millennials Reshaping Franchise Ownership?

Franchise ownership is no longer viewed as a career move reserved for experienced executives. Increasingly, Gen Z and millennial entrepreneurs are choosing franchising as their first step into business ownership, combining the independence of entrepreneurship with the support of an established business model. Rather than waiting until later in their careers to become business owners, many younger entrepreneurs are choosing franchising as a way to build equity, gain operational experience, and learn from an established system before pursuing future ventures of their own.

In a recent Business Insider article, Andrew Titus, President of United Franchise Group™, shared why younger entrepreneurs are embracing franchising, while Graze Craze® franchise owner Amaan Bhanji demonstrated how the right franchise system can help first-time business owners turn entrepreneurial ambitions into reality.

Why Younger Entrepreneurs Are Choosing Franchising

According to Titus, today’s franchise candidates look very different than they did a decade ago. Today, more aspiring entrepreneurs are pursuing franchise ownership in their 20s and early 30s.

Franchising offers a unique balance of independence and structure. Instead of building a business entirely from scratch, owners gain access to proven operating systems, established brands, training, and ongoing support while still building equity in a business they own.

As startup costs continue to rise, many younger entrepreneurs are also finding opportunity with emerging franchise brands that provide lower barriers to entry and greater opportunities for long-term growth.

A Graze Craze Franchisee’s Entrepreneurial Journey

Graze Craze franchise owner Amaan Bhanji represents this new generation of franchise owners. After deciding during high school that he wanted to build a business of his own, Bhanji spent two years identifying the right opportunity, securing a location, and completing franchise training before opening his Arlington, Virginia location at just 22 years old.

“I knew in my gut that I needed to build something of my own,” Bhanji shared. “Attending university and working for someone else just did not appeal to me.”

For Gen Z franchise owners like Bhanji, franchising offers more than a business opportunity. It provides a proven framework to learn site selection, operations, hiring, marketing, and leadership while building experience that will support future entrepreneurial ventures.

As more millennials and Gen Z professionals seek alternatives to traditional career paths, franchising continues to emerge as a powerful pathway to business ownership. By combining established systems with entrepreneurial freedom, franchise brands are helping the next generation of business owners build successful companies while preparing for long-term growth.
